Additional Information
The De Haze family belonged to the civic and mercantile elite of Middelburg (Holland) in the 17th and early 18th centuries. Elias de Haze (1689–1752) served the VOC in the East Indies and was Governor of Ternate from 1731 to 1734. He married Sara Sonmans in Batavia on 23 September 1738 (d. 13 Sept. 1741) and, after her death, Catharine Emants in 1744. The present underglaze-blue eight-petal lotus pattern with a central De Haze armorial medallion is contemporary with a related service bearing the conjoined De Haze–Sonmans arms in two adjacent shields (accolées). These marriage dates place the commissions between September 1738 and before September 1741.
