CANTON FOLDING FAN
Particularly desirable in the export market, Chinese folding fans dating from the reign of Emperor Daoguang (1821-1850) are notable examples of Chinese decorative arts. Sophistically painted with highly detailed scenes, they evidence the technical ability of the Chinese artisans, as well as the increasing exchange between China and the West. Symbolic reminders of that intercultural coexistence are the conspicuous panoramic views of Macao, an important trading outpost that had been under Portuguese control since the 16th century. Performing a crucial role in the Sino-Western trade, by the 19th century the city stood out and a gateway for European trade, and was thus visited by British, Portuguese, and many other western merchants. Its strategic position, by the mouth of the Pearl River, enabled its prosperity before the opening of other Chinese ports in the aftermath of the Opium Wars of 1839-1842 and 1856-1860. These conflicts increased the pressure on China for the opening of its trade, further reinforcing Macao’s position in the international setting. Analogous Canton folding fans were produced to appeal to the western taste, namely amongst those attracted by Macao’s exoticism. Such an example is the fan at the British Royal Collection (RCIN25072), similar to the one herewith described. In addition to capturing local landscapes, fans did also depict aspects of trading and social activity, often featuring European merchant ships, thus boosting Macao’s role in the western popular imaginary. T he fan that we are now presenting for sale at auction was made in Canton, as is evidenced by its storage case. An exotic luxury item, it embodies cultural fusion between East and West. Landscape fans popularity among 19th century European and American wealthy elites, is a testimony to the allure of Chinese and Macanese culture, while simultaneously alluding to an age of intense cultural and commercial exchange.
