French silver and crystal
Classical shape dating from the Consulate or Empire period, resting on 3 tall feet of tripod stand with palm frieze decoration, over a guilloche ground with central pine cone finial and foliage. Fully guilloche ornate uprights with three Egyptian winged figures holding the Nemes, and in the lower section three claw and ball feet of delicate decoration with beaded friezes and palms on guilloche ground. Foliage lid pommel copying the base

Additional Information

Antoine HIENCE was a master silversmith in Paris, specialising in silver pieces dinner sets. His first mark was engraved in 1798 and registered at 36, quai des orfèvres. A second mark was engraved in September 8, 1821 at 60, quai des orfèvres. His activity ceased in September 22, 1828.

This mustard pot is a rare testimony of silver tableware from the early First Empire, in a style that became known as "Retour d'Egypte", and which will remain in fashion for a short period of time. For this reason silver and gold pieces, as well as tableware, representative of this style, are rare, both in the antiques trade and in museum collections.
