Description

Urushi lacquered Cypress wood (Chamaecyparis obtusa)
Of characteristic shape with domed cover and profuse decoration in brown and gilt (maki-e) lacquer and mother-of-pearl inlay (raden)
Ornamented with panels of birds and trees (camellia niponica, cherry trees, acer, morning-glory and others)
Each panel framed by chequered bands within triangular pattern borders
Inner cover coated in brown and gilt lacquer with applied mother-of-pearl elements and densely decorated with kudzu leaves
Gilt copper alloy handles, lock and corner pieces with engraved and scalloped decoration
Red lacquer "Zen" character to base
Momoyama period (1568-1600)
