Sculptures like this were popular during Tang Dynasty. According to fashion for court ladies of this period, women with a plumper figure were preferred.
It is said that Yang Guifei, consort to Emperor Xuanzong (r. 712-756), known has one of the Four Beauties of ancient China, set the trend for ladies of ample form.
The result of Oxford Authentication Ltd. thermoluminescence test no.C103d60 dated 4 March 2003, is consistent with the dating of this lot.
